Director Q&A

Overview

The latest film from acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, CHALLENGERS) is wildly ambitious, gorgeously rendered adaptation of the famed novel by William S. Burroughs, starring Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Lesley Manville and Jason Schwartzman.

William Lee (Craig), an American expat, writer and habitual heroin user in early-1950’s Mexico City, spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few contacts with other members of the small gay American community who have found freedom there. When a young and enigmatic former solider named Eugene Allerton (Starkey), new to the city, catches Lee’s eye, he swoons into a headlong long affair, showing him, for the first time, that it might finally be possible to establish an intimate connection with someone. Brilliantly evoking the iconoclastic atmosphere of Burroughs’ novel, Queer is a dazzling, universal love story featuring expressionistic flights of fancy, psychedelic surrealism and surprising tenderness.

Reviews

"Queer doesn’t scrimp on provocation and pleasure, but it’s also a beautiful film about male loneliness, and the way a solitary life can so easily shade into a life sentence."
– THE TELEGRAPH

"Guadagnino wants not only to expand your consciousness as a moviegoer, but to cut you open and rearrange all the parts of you that see and feel things when you watch a film at all."
– INDIEWIRE

"In Queer, Luca Guadagnino meets William S. Burroughs on the iconoclast’s own slippery terms and the result is mesmerizing."
– HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

"Embodying Burroughs’ alter ego and cycling through Lee’s lust, jealousy, world-weariness, neediness, and bliss, Craig cracks this smitten, doomed romantic wide open. It’s the role of a lifetime if you hold nothing back. So he doesn’t."
– ROLLING STONE
